If you are just starting your acne treatment, one of the first things that you need to consider is to choose the right sunscreen for your acne-prone skin. Protecting your skin from the sun is essential to the success of your acne treatment as your skin might become photosensitive during the treatment. So, stepping out without the right sunscreen might make the condition even worse.

Things to consider while choosing sunscreen:

1. Look for sunscreen labeled oil-free
For daily use, go for an oil-free, water-based sunscreen. It prevents your face from feeling like an oil slick and doesn’t clog pores. Don’t use sunscreen that is meant for your body on your face as these are generally thick, heavy and greasy, contributing to acne breakouts.

2. Get broad spectrum protection
For maximum skin protection, use a sunscreen that is labeled “broad spectrum.” This protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Some sunscreens will protect only against the “burn and tan” UVB rays. But UVA rays also damage the skin. To completely protect your skin from the sun, choose a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

3. Choose SPF 30 or higher
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a way to measure protection from UVB rays. The higher the SPF, the more protection you get. Using a sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 or higher everyday blocks about 97% of UV rays. Apply sunscreen every day year-round for the best protection, even when it’s cloudy or rainy.

4. Use your sunscreen along with your acne treatment products
Apply your acne treatment medication first, and then wait for a few minutes until it’s fully absorbed. Then apply your sunscreen over the top for better results.

Many people who have acne hate the feel of sunscreen on their skin even though they know that they need it. The problem is that they are not using the right sunscreen for their skin type. It is better to ask your dermatologist to recommend the right sunscreen that goes well with your acne treatment.
