Makeup and Acne

Posted on 24th May, 2019

Many people wonder if they can wear makeup when they are encountered with acne. The answer is ‘Yes’ but not all kind of makeups but a few selective ones that don’t worsen the situation. Makeup that tends to block skin pores are the ones leading to acne. So, it is very important to go for makeup that is non-comedogenic.

Treatment regimen to be followed to treat acne while still going for makeup:

Choose your makeup carefully:
You should only use makeup that has one of the following terms on its pack:
– Non-Comedogenic
– Does not clog the pores
– Oil-Free

Apply the makeup gently:
Acne prone skin is also prone to irritation, so utmost care must be taken while applying makeup. Brushes must be used very lightly ensuring that it doesn’t irritate skin. Avoid sharing your makeup kit with others and clean brushes regularly to ensure removal of any acne-causing entities.

Wash your face with a mild cleanser:
Dermatologists recommend that acne prone skin should be washed twice a day. First after waking up and then at night just before sleeping. Many such cleansers are available that contain either salicylic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide or Sodium Sulfacetamide.

Ensure that the cleanser also contains one of the following terms on its pack:
– Non-Comedogenic
– Does not clog the pores
– Oil-Free

Do not scrub your face while cleaning:
You must apply cleanser gently on your face with your fingertips and spread it gently over the face. Then rinse it off with water. Ensure that you do not scrub your face, even if you have applied makeup. To remove makeup, use a makeup remover that does not clog the pores and is gentle on the skin.

Treat your acne:
Dermatologists recommend that the acne should be treated with products that contain one or more of the following:
– Retinol Based Products – to dry out acne
– Antibiotics – To kill the bacteria causing acne
– Cleansers – To remove dirt and debris from affected area
– Sunscreens – To help protect the skin as skin becomes photosensitive after acne treatment

It usually takes 1 month for the results to start showing once you start the treatment regimen.

Bottom line

If you have an acne breakout after using makeup or are unable to treat your acne effectively by using treatment products, consult your dermatologist right away. He/she will provide you the right treatment based on grade and type of acne that you’re confronted with.
