World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), a global network dedicated to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding worldwide, coordinates and organizes the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) between August 1-7.

Breastfeeding is very important in the initial stages of a baby’s life as it builds the baby’s immune system. As a part of this celebration, we have come up with a few tips that every new mother should be aware to give her baby a good start in life.

Help your baby get a proper latch
Help your baby get a proper latch
Choose a position to feed your baby that can help your baby latch well. If your baby cries even after you feed him/her for hours or your breast becomes sore, it indicates that the baby didn’t have a proper latch. If you have latch-on issues while breastfeeding, it is advised to consult your doctor to get it resolved at the earliest.

Keep your nipples clean
While breastfeeding, it’s always important to keep your nipples clean. Wipe it before and after your baby breastfeeds. Don’t keep your nipple too dry or too moist. Use lanolin to moisturize your nipple. Don’t use harsh and powerful soaps to clean the nipple. While cleaning, ensure not to wipe out the natural oils that the breast secrets.

Feed your baby only when needed
Each baby is different, so is its feeding capacity. Feed your baby only when he/she is hungry. The time and intake vary from baby to baby. A baby should normally be fed for 3-4 hours. If he/she sleeps more than that, it’s better to wake the baby up and feed him/her. In a few days, you will get used to your baby’s feeding pattern.

Bathe your baby daily

You can bathe your baby right from its birth. Some have the misconception that the baby should not be bathed until the umbilical cord falls off. Bathe your baby daily twice and use cleanser that is prescribed by your doctor.

Help the baby bond
Help the baby bond
Bonding is one of the most pleasurable parts of baby care. Breastfeeding helps you connect with your baby and lets you observe him/her closely. It is the time where you can notice all the changes happening in your baby and observe skin conditions such as eczema, cradle cap and rashes. Help your baby bond with your family members.

Motherhood is one of the greatest blessings any woman can experience. Relish in it as you take care of your baby and bond with her well. Consult your doctor to get your queries resolved as and when it occurs.
