Improves hair growth when applied on to the scalp, moisturizes skin when applied regularly, helps tackle ulcers and throat infections – these are some of the benefits that are associated with coconut oil. But what many don’t know is that it can act as a toothpaste too!
From massaging onto the scalp to oil-pulling, this oil is literally packed with numerous benefits, particularly when it comes to health. Studies show that the anti-bacterial properties of coconut oil could possibly combat certain strains of Streptococcus bacteria, which reside in the mouth. Regular use of coconut oil is also capable of inhibiting the multiplication of a good number of bacteria and also, effective in reducing the risk of oral infections.
Should I dump my toothpaste?
No – it is too early to literally replace your toothpaste with coconut oil. A sudden switch will prove more harmful than beneficial. The change has to be made over a period of time.
For starters, you could try taking a tablespoon of good quality coconut oil, swirl it around in your mouth for as long as you can and spit it out. Once you have gotten used to that, you can make your own toothpaste using coconut oil fir regular use.
The recipe is:
- ½ cup coconut oil
- 2 or 3 tbsp baking soda
- 15-30 drops lemon juice
Mix the ingredients together and use regularly, and put an end to your teeth and gum problems!!
